SPRING has
come and gone, and I have been asleep at the wheel,
so to speak. I haven't changed this page, or
it's picture in too long a time. Since Spring
has pretty much slipped away, I'll give you an
update on SUMMER. We will
be experiencing a longer than usual snowmelt and
runoff season this year, so BE CAREFUL out there.
The water will be high and swift. 6 inches of
swift water in enough to knock a man off his feet...
foot can float a car. Drownings are on the
rise already and there is threat that some rivers
may be closed to the public due for a while to high
water. Watch the stream flows of the
For those of you coming from out
of state to Colorado and the mountains, we want to
take a moment to discuss altitude sickness. We have
watched and cared for numerous enthusiastic
prospectors coming here for a few days, working too
hard the first day, and being unable or barely able
to get out of bed for the next two. The change in
altitude works your body much harder than you think,
and, depending on your fitness level, can put you
down for up to three days. Take those first few
days EASY. DRINK WATER!!!!! Lot's of it. Watch
your alcohol intake, as this will effect you
adversely as well. DO NOT start eating all the salty
things you don't usually eat and watch your salt in
restaurant foods as well. If you feel sluggish and
unwell and think you ate something that has
disagreed with you, you may very well have altitude
sickness, not food poisoning. It will pass in a day
or two, but it can be life threatening if you do not
listen to your body and slow down. YES, we make it
look easy......but we LIVE here, and we know that it
isn't fun to get out of shape in the winter and then
try to play in the mountains in the summer. With
those thoughts in mind, have fun out there, and fill
your holes. Remember the prospectors codes of
ethics and be courteous to each other. Good
Prospecting to You.
Are you looking for something to do while you
are in Colorado that is connected with mining or
prospecting? We have a calendar of things to
do while you are visiting in Colorado that are right
up your alley. The calendar will carry common
holidays, GPOC meetings, as well as gem and mineral
show dates and events going on in Colorado that
prospectors can participate in for a day or a few
hours of fun.
