GOLD
PROSPECTORS OF
COLORADO
History
The Gold Prospectors of Colorado was
organized in November and December
of 1974 by a group of people
interested in Gold Prospecting and
other similar outdoor activities.
The club is incorporated in Colorado .
Purpose
The Gold Prospectors of Colorado is
a fraternal, social, non-profit
association whose primary function
is to enhance family outdoor
recreation. This is accomplished by
establishing programs to educate all
members in the identification of,
and prospecting of gold and other
precious metals and minerals.
Claims
The club currently has one claim on
Beaver Creek, 5 ½ miles north of
Fairplay, one claim south of Point
Bar on Badger Creek on the Arkansas
River, and one claim north of Buena
Vista also on the Arkansas River.
Members may use these provided a
signed disclaimer is on file in the
membership office. These claims are
under a special 4 year plan of
operation approved by the U.S.D.A. Forest Service
and BLM. RESTRICTIONS ON THE USE OF
THESE CLAIMS MUST BE ADHEARED TO BY
MEMBERS. VIOLATIONS WILL RESULT IN
TERMINATION OF MEMBERSHIP AND
POSSIBLE PROSECTUTION. MEMBERS WILL
STRICTLY FOLLOW ALL BLM AND
FOREST SERVICE GUIDELINES AND HAVE
ANY AND ALL BOND OR OTHER REQUIRED
PERMITS IN THEIR POSSESSION AS WELL
AS YOUR MEMBERSHIP CARD. We will be
adding claims as they become
available. The club also maintains
a working relationship with the BLM
with emphasis on the Point Bar area
and the
Arkansas River drainage. Respect
our claims and the land. Carry your
trash out and leave your area
cleaner than you found it. FILL IN
YOUR HOLES.
Activities
The activities of the Gold
Prospectors of Colorado are:
1.
To further knowledge and
practical skills of prospecting by
members using demonstrations,
films, and oral presentations at
monthly meetings.
2.
To conduct prospecting field
trips.
3.
To sponsor public events
which have educational and
recreational value.
4.
To undertake any related
activity which furthers the purpose
of the organization.
During the summer and fall months
there are field trips into gold
producing areas planned at least
once a month. Some of these outings
are overnight excursions which
include campouts. Evening
gatherings around campfires produce
many tales about the day’s
activities and also historic tales
of prospecting, lost mines and
treasures!
The Gold Prospectors of Colorado
hold the Colorado State Gold Panning
Championships annually. Categories
include Colorado State, Colorado Ladies, Colorado Men’s, Colorado Juniors, Team,
Worlds Dry and National style
competitions. First place winners
receive a trophy or medal.
Membership
The Gold Prospectors of Colorado has
three types of memberships:
Individual, Family, Honorary, and
Lifetime. The present annual dues
for an individual are $25.00, and
family $30.00. Children reaching 18
years of age must make application
for their own membership.
Memberships are for a period of 12
months from the date of enrollment.
These memberships include the use of
the club’s claims. Honorary
memberships are bestowed upon
individuals for their outstanding
contribution to the purpose of the
club. Lifetime memberships are
awarded to those who have spent 100
days volunteering their time
teaching prospecting at club
sponsored panning demonstrations.
I.D. pins are furnished to new
members – replacement of lost pins
will be at the rate of $1.00 each.
All family members ages 5 and over
will receive membership cards.
One benefit of membership is the
monthly newsletter, the
“Prospector’s Quill”. This
publication keeps members informed
about club activities. It also
includes articles concerned with
educating members in the art of
prospecting, gold panning, staking
claims, and other related subjects.
Another major function is to update
everyone concerning prospecting and
mining legislation at both state and
national levels.
Another club benefit is free
admission into the Western Museum of
Mining and Industry.
The Gold Prospectors of Colorado has
members from many states. There is
a wide range of prospecting
experience in the club, from
greenhorn to the professional
miner. We welcome all interested
people no matter what their
experience or where they live.
Future
The Gold Prospectors of Colorado
plans to grow in the future by
promoting recreational prospecting.
We also plan to protect our right to
prospect on public lands by keeping
informed about pending legislation
and by contacting our governmental
representatives concerning such
legislation.
